Overview of the typical application methodology of APP membrane
Surface Preparation
Prior to the application of the APP membrane, it is imperative to thoroughly clean and prepare the surface. This process includes the removal of any dust, debris, or loose materials from the substrate. A clean and smooth surface is crucial to ensure optimal adhesion of the membrane.
Primer Application
In certain situations, a primer may be applied to improve the adhesion of the APP membrane to the substrate. The selection of primer is contingent upon the specific material and conditions of the substrate. It is standard practice to allow the primer to dry before proceeding with the application.
Heating and Torch Application
APP membranes are generally applied using a torch method. The underside of the membrane features a thermofusible film that, when heated, establishes a robust bond with the substrate. Roofing professionals meticulously heat the membrane with a propane torch while rolling it out onto the prepared surface. In torch-down roofing, the membrane is heated and subsequently pressed onto the substrate to ensure effective adhesion.
Overlapping and Sealing
Each roll of APP membrane should overlap the adjacent roll to form a watertight seal. The width of the overlap is determined by the manufacturer’s specifications, typically around 3 inches (7.5 cm). To secure the bond between the overlapping sections, a roller is utilized or hand pressure is applied.
Detail Work
Special attention is given to critical areas such as corners, penetrations (vents, pipes, etc.), and edges, where waterproofing is essential. To strengthen these regions and prevent water ingress, additional membrane layers or flashing details may be employed.
Application Methodology of APP Membrane
Final Inspection
Upon completion of the membrane application, a final inspection is conducted to verify proper adhesion, seams, and details. Any identified defects or areas needing further attention are promptly addressed and rectified.
Protection Layer
To safeguard the APP membrane from UV radiation, physical damage, and weathering, a protective layer such as gravel, pavers, or a reflective coating may be added, depending on the specific project requirements and application.
